A foreign festival

Describe a foreign festival you have experienced or heard of.

You should say:

what the festival is

how people usually celebrate on this occasion

what is special about this festival

and explain why you like this festival.

Speaking of my favorite foreign festival, I will tell you what I know about Christmas, which is a famous festival in most western countries. I believe that it is the most popular celebration around the world, and even though it is not a traditional festival here in China, everyone has heard of it and the related customs.

First of all, Christmas is a religious holiday. People who believe in God celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ(耶稣基督). And a lot of people in Europe and South America go to church on Christmas Eve. The Bible tells us that Jesus was born on December the 25th in a stable. The priest gives a sermon (=speech) at the mass, and very often people sing religious songs together.

Most families get together on Christmas Eve to celebrate, while others wait for Christmas Day to organize a big feast that might last for a long time. Besides the feast, the celebration includes millions of fabulous traditions such as decorating one’s house with tinsel(金属箔), pictures of Santa Claus and his reindeer; putting up a Christmas tree with lights and shining ornaments(装饰); buying presents for everyone in your family, which I believe is the best part of festivals. People of all ages enjoy this holiday period, not least because people in western countries have a 2-week holiday away from work and schools.

When I was in high school, I had a foreign teacher from America who told me that the traditions could be different from one country to another, and also from one family to another. He said that in America, it is common for people to eat a roast turkey or ham with gravy (=sauce) as main course and Christmas pudding for dessert. Of course, when we talk about Christmas, we can’t avoid mentioning Santa Claus. He’s a plump (=fat), jolly, white-bearded man wearing a red coat with white collar and cuffs and white-cuffed red trousers. In Western culture, parents tell their children that if they behave well, Santa will bring them presents. Generally speaking, Christmas enjoy great popularity among children. Most of them are crazy about Christmas. They get so excited about receiving so many presents and can’t wait for Santa Claus to come and deliver their gifts. There are many different Christmas songs about Santa and his reindeer. They are called Christmas carols(圣诞颂歌). Santa comes from the North Pole, and he usually comes down people’s chimneys to set gifts at the foot of the Christmas tree.

People always put a Christmas tree in their houses and decorate it with colored lights. They also hang Christmas balls and other sparkling ornaments on it. At the top of the tree there should be a star. I think Christmas is a joyful festival even for those who don’t believe in Jesus. Next year, I intend to study in Bristol and I truly hope I will get a chance to experience this festival with a British family.

圣诞节简单介绍+宗教信仰+各类活动介绍+圣诞老人+圣诞树。

{背景知识}

A traditional festival

Describe a traditional festival you have experienced or heard of.

You should say:

what the festival is

how people usually celebrate on this occasion

what is special about this festival

and explain why you like this festival.

Talking about a traditional festival, I want to mention the Spring Festival, which is by far the most important celebration of the year in China. It is a very particular time for all family members to get together, just like Christmas in the West. All people living away from home go back, and it seems to be the busiest time for transportation systems for about half a month before the Spring Festival. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are crowded with home returnees.

Store owners are busy then as everybody goes out to purchase necessities for the New Year. Materials not only include rice, flour, chicken, duck, fish and meat, but also fruit, candies and kinds of nuts. What's more, various decorations, new clothes and shoes for the children as well as gifts for the elderly, friends and relatives, are all on the list of purchasing.

Before the New Year comes, the people completely clean the indoors and outdoors of their homes as well as their clothes and all their bedclothes, in order to get rid of all the negative dirt and dust we have accumulated in the last year.

Then people begin decorating their rooms featuring an atmosphere of rejoicing and festivity. All the door panels will be pasted with Spring Festival couplets, highlighting Chinese calligraphy with black characters on red paper. Also, pictures of the god and wealth will be posted on front doors to ward off evil spirits and welcome peace and abundance. When I was a child, my father used to make me paint those scrolls and he even taught me Chinese calligraphy. Nowadays, we mostly buy them in a shop but we still believe they will scare the evil spirits away.

When it comes to the New Year, everybody dresses up and it’s a good time for relatives, friends, and classmates as well as colleagues to exchange greetings, gifts and chat leisurely. And each child will get lucky money wrapped up in red paper. It’s a time to be generous and considerate with those we really care about.

On New Year’s Eve, everyone in China watches a TV program called the CCTV Gala. Famous hosts, singers, actors and even athletes join in to perform in front of the whole country.  At midnight, we set off fireworks and the whole city suddenly comes to life. The dark sky becomes colorful and everyone has a blast.

The lively atmosphere not only fills every household, but permeates to streets and lanes. A series of activities such as lion dancing, dragon dancing and temple fairs will be held for days. The Spring Festival then comes to an end when the Lantern Festival is finished.
