A traditional event

Describe a traditional event in your hometown.

You should say:

what this event is

when it happens

who participate in this event

and explain how you feel about this event.

Well, one of the important traditional events in my hometown is the temple fair, which has a very long history, probably dating from Ming and Qing dynasties. And now it usually occurs from the first to the seventh day of the first month on the lunar calendar. Chinese still love visiting temple fairs during Spring Festival and organizers are adding new elements to the events to keep pace with the times.

The temple fair is no less than a bunch of folks selling and buying goods. Temporary simple buildings pieced by regular plastic boards were casually scattered over the district designated for commerce. A lot of people stream back and forth across the path, leaving practically a narrow gap accessible by mere three people abreast(并肩的).However, these curious and patient purchasers seem insensitive to the treatment of being packed like sardines .They must have been fascinated by the superb collection of cheap and fine articles on display. Despite the low price, bargaining and passable quality do make the temple fair a paradise for housewives.

Here, likewise, is labeled by men eager for entertainment and kids longing for snacks as heaven.(这里,也同样被寻求娱乐的男人和渴望小吃的孩子们誉为天堂。)There are dragon and lion dances, waist drum dancing, as well as other folk performances, and even some staged traditional wedding ceremonies. Meanwhile, other actors on stilts(踩着高跷)reenact the scenes from classic Chinese literature including “A Journey to the West”(西游记)and “Water Margins” (水浒传). Around the acrobats, people are shouting and cheering in high spirit with their necks stretched to the limit in order to watch more clearly.

Besides, snacks are generally cooked on site in the open air. The rich and strong fragrance flows through the sky straight to the afar, luring anyone accidentally smelling it to come and have an extravagant try of all the delicious food. The temple fair can be recognized as Chinese traditional carnival(嘉年华), however less chaotic and more peaceful.

For me, I like the temple fairs because there are so many games to play, food to eat and performances to appreciate. But most importantly, it is definitely a cultural experience, and allows people to see Chinese cultures from a very detailed perspective.

A wedding

Describe a wedding you have attended.

You should say:

when it was

who got married

what happened at the wedding

and explain how you feel about this wedding.

I've actually been to quite a few weddings and a friend of mine got married last month. I went to her wedding ceremony which was held in a church and began at 9 in the morning. It was a typical Western-style ceremony.

The whole wedding ceremony in the church was pretty simple but solemn. First, the pastor(牧师)made some opening remarks. Then, the bridegroom, in a black tuxedo, made his way to the altar with the best man and waited there. With the wedding march rhythm, my friend (the bride) rounded her father’s arm to walk towards the bridegroom. Then her father put her daughter’s hand on the bridegroom’s hand. It was the climax that the pastor asked the bride and bridegroom whether they could support each other in their whole life. Afterwards, they exchanged wedding rings and they raised their right hands to give an oath, so the wedding ring could here show the sincere of the oath. I was so moved watching my friend being so happy.

After they kissed and were pronounced husband and wife, the couple was showered with handfuls of rose petals.

In the end of the wedding ceremony the bride threw her bouquet to the assembled group of all unmarried women in attendance with folklore suggesting the person who caught it would be the next to be married. All girls tried to become the lucky one, but you know what? A 9-year-old girl ended up catching it.

After the ceremony, we started the wedding reception, which was held at Shangri-La Hotel. It was a fancy hotel and definitely the best hotel in my hometown. When all the guests arrived, cocktails and food were served. People proposed toasts and gave the new couple their best wishes. I was sitting next to the bride’s father and he told me lots of funny stories about his family.

When the dancing began, the bride and groom did the first dance. They looked wonderful together and everyone could tell they were deeply in love. The music was slow and so romantic.

After a while later, the couple started cake-cutting which was my favorite part. The cake was huge and delicious and everyone got a bite.

At the end of the reception, all of us gathered in a circle and sang happy songs. That was a really memorable experience.
